‘Tired’ AB calls it quits, social media explodes
"It’s not about earning more somewhere else, I’ve run out of gas and I feel it is time to move on."
Former Proteas captain and batsman AB de Villiers has retired from international cricket with immediate effect on Wednesday afternoon.
After the news broke, social media platforms were abuzz with posts and tweets.
The 34-year-old Pretoria-based player announced the news on his Twitter account.
“Today I want to let you know that I’ve decided to retire from international cricket with immediate effect. After 114 test matches, 228 one-day internationals, 78 T20Is, I think it’s time for others to take over. I have had my turn and to be honest, I’m tired,” he said in the video.

Speaking at the High Performance Centre in Hatfield, De Villiers however said he would still be available to play for the Titans.
“It’s not about earning more somewhere else, I’ve run out of gas and I feel it is time to move on. Everything comes to an end.”
He thanked fans, teammates and Cricket SA for their support.

Former Proteas and current Titans coach Mark Boucher reacted to the news on his Twitter account:
“I remember this young guy on his 1st day out for Proteas. What an inspiration, person and player he turned out to be. Thank you for everything you have done and been for your country, teammates and fans.”
