Local keeper wants to play for Bafana
Another Mamelodi goalkeeper who holds a good record in the goalkeeper department.
JDR Stars keeper Thabang Makgatho has a dream to play in the premier soccer league.
The 23-year-old currently turns out for the ABC Motsepe league outfit where he has a good keeping record – only conceding four goals in the 15 games he played this season.
And the ambitious stopper says his high work ethic will see him through.
“I training for two hours a day seven days a week,” he says.
Makgatho started playing as a central defender at the age of six before picking up the gloves and has not looked back.
“I really enjoy being a goalkeeper,” he says adding he has lost count of the medals and trophies he has won since his first for the under-9.
Makgatho believes he has improved as a keeper since he started working with goalkeeper coach Reggie Nare of Mamelodi goalkeeper academy.
“I used to struggle with aerial balls and passing accuracy but now I think I am ready for a big move and any team that needs a keeper, I am available.”
He says he won’t put himself under unnecessary pressure to achieve his goal but is determined to play in the premier league en route to Bafana Bafana.
“The biggest stage I have ever played on was the Castle league and super league.”
Makgatho says he is motivated by late Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates keeper Senzo Meyiwa “for the way that he dominated the game” and Germany and Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer.
“I want to warn the youth of Mamelodi of the dangers of drugs and crime,” he says. “They destroy lives. Rather get involved in sport to fill your idle time.”
