World Cup Roundup: Portugal survive elimination scare

Iran came within a whisker of sending Portugal packing while Uruguay spoilt Russia's party.

Spain 2-2 Morocco

Spain secured top spot in Group B with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Morocco and will play their first knockout game against Russia on 30 June.

Iran 1-1 Portugal

Iran came within a whisker of sending Portugal packing after the teams drew 1-1 in their Group B clash.

On the cusp of half-time, the stalemate was broken as Ricardo Quaresma, instead of sending over another of his fine crosses, cut in from the right wing and hit the ball with the outside of his right foot into the top left corner (1-0).

The goal of the tournament so far and Portugal were smiling.

They thought it was all over early in the second stanza when Ronaldo stepped up to take a penalty but it was brilliantly saved by Alireza Beiranvand.

Ronaldo escaped a red card when he elbowed an opponent in an off-the-ball incident.

In the 90th minute, Cedric was deemed to have handballed in the box and Karim Ansarifard took the spot kick for Iran, beating Rui Patricio low to his left (1-1).

Then came that 93rd-minute drama when Mehdi Taremi got the ball in the box but only managed to find the side netting.

Uruguay 3-0 Russia

Goals by Edison Cavani and Luis Suarez and an own goal by Alan Dzagoev were enough to give Uruguay their third win of the world cup.

Uruguay will face Portugal in the round of 16.

Egypt 1-3 Saudi Arabia

In another match in Group A, Saudi Arabia won 3-1 against Egypt. Star player Mohammed Salah scored two goals in this world cup but was not influential enough to guide the Pharaohs to the next round.
