India will on Wednesday have to set a new record for the highest ever fourth innings total in a test match at SuperSport Park in Centurion if they want to win the second test against South Africa.

The current record for the highest fourth innings total belongs to England. They recorded 251/8 to beat South Africa in a test match way back in the 1999/2000 season.

India needs 286 runs to win the test after they bowled South Africa out for 258 shortly after tea on Tuesday afternoon.

However, Virat Kohli and his team will need a few brilliant batting performances on the last day to pull this one through after South Africa has caused major damage to their batting line-up in the last 90 minutes of play on day four.

The Proteas made a breakthrough early in India’s last innings when Kagiso Rabada bowled opening batsman Murali Vijay (9) in the eighth over with the visitors’ total on 11.

A few overs later Lungi Ngidi shook India further when he got rid of KL Rahul (4) with one of his fast deliveries. Keshav Maharaj took the catch and after only eleven overs India have already lost both their opening batsmen.

Ngidi was not finished with the visitors yet. In the 16^th over he got the big fish when he caught India’s captain Virat Kohli (5) leg before wicket. This was a devastating blow for the world’s best side. They have lost the core of their batting power very early in the innings. Kohli’s wicket was especially a big blow after he scored half of the visitors’ runs in the first innings when he recorded 153 runs with a gutsy captain’s knock.

With a full day’s play left, cricket fans can definitely expect a result in this test. The only question is which one of the two teams will deliver exceptional performances to swing the scale in their favour.
