Five reasons to join in the fun at the SPAR Irene Lantern Race
There are several reasons why participation in a night race makes the experience more enjoyable than during the day when the sun is shining.
Everyone has a time of day when they prefer to run. It could be the quiet early morning hours or the coolness of the evening.
No matter what your preference is there are a few reasons to indulge in a night time run, softly lit by hundreds of lanterns that guide you as you make your way through the scenic roads of Irene.
* Because more of your friends will probably come out because their work and responsibilities are taken care of for the day. After 18:00 there will also be less traffic to get through on the way to the ARC campus in Irene.
* The after-party is better not being under the sun. At the venue, there be loads to enjoy after the race. Besides time spent with family and friends, there will be plenty of vendors selling delicious food.
* Because we don’t have to wake up at 05:00 in the morning. Instead you’ll be tucked into bed by your usual bedtime and able to sleep in a bit longer the next morning.
* Because night running is cooler (pun intended).
* You’ll experience a race ambience like no other. Along with hundreds of glowing lanterns, runners on the route have asked to wear headlights and other lights. This creates a romantic night race experience like no other – perfect for Valentine’s Day.
The SPAR Irene Lantern race takes place on 14 February and starts promptly at 19:00. The race route begins at the ARC-Irene Campus with both a 10km race and 5km fun run available.
The venue offers ample safe parking as well as plenty of delicious refreshments for sale and picnic areas. There will be cash prizes awarded to the top runners as well as loads of SPAR Grocery Hamper spot giveaways. The first 10 men, 10 women and all category winners receive gold medals and the next 100 finishers will be given silver medals. The first 3 000 to finish the 5km and 10km route will receive bronze medals.
