Podium position for local canoeists at famous Dusi

Two canoeists from Centurion performed exceptionally well in this year's Dusi Canoe marathon, which has been completed in challenging conditions.

A number of members of the local Centurion Canoe Club based at Rietvlei Dam successfully finished the 2018 Dusi Canoe marathon.

The race took place between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, a distance of some 120km. Extreme heat and humid conditions lasted throughout the race.

While the river is frequently in flood between December and March, the last few years of drought has had a huge impact on the river water levels. This conditions had the effect that the race, which was always known as the toughest endurance canoeing event in the world, was even more challenging than ever before.

With the low water levels there was quite a bit of getting stuck on rocks in certain sections, which made the requirement to carry boats over rough terrain necessary.  Those who can run with a boat therefore had a definite advantage.

Participant had to carry and walk with boats for kilometres around rocky rapids.

The top finishers from Centurion were Raymond Rorich and Michael Kirkby, who finished in a time of 10 hours 14 minutes. They ended third in the sub veteran age group and overall as 51st K2 pair across the finish line.
