Supersport holds Pirates to a draw

United are one point above relegation.

Supersport United held Orlando Pirates to a goalless draw at the Mbombela stadium in Nelspruit on Wednesday night.

The Pretoria side was desperate to get something out of the game especially with only few games to avoid relegation.

As expected, title contenders Pirates got off the blocks quickest but could not find that opening goal with Mpho Makola and Luvuyo Memela shots both finding the post in the first half.

United had a few chances of their own but failed to trouble the Bucs keeper.

In the end, a draw was a good result for United given that Ajax Cape Town won their game against Wits on the same night. Ajax are 15th in the log, a point behind United, with four games to go.

Had United lost, they would have found themselves in 15th position and having to win their remaining games to secure survival.

They will now face Cape Town City in Cape Town on Saturday.

Coach Kaitano Tembo applauded his troops for holding a high-flying Pirates side.

“I’ve got to give credit to the boys. It wasn’t an easy game. This is a very good Pirates team. In the first half, I think we tried to be a bit more adventurous. I think we created better opportunities when we pressed them a bit high,” Tembo told SuperSport TV after the match.

Tembo admitted his side was second best on the night but praised his players’ effort.

“All we wanted was not to concede, especially in the first half. We knew we would not have the legs to keep pressing them high,” he said.

“So we needed to play them on transition and we had a couple of chances on transition. We had to sit back. I think the performance of the team today was brilliant especially coming from Kenya.”
