Several new records at Uitsig High School’s mass relay event
South Africa's largest annual mass school relay event, presented by Uitsig High School from Centurion, was held again in Pretoria last week.
The Uitsig High School Mass Relay event, which for many years has been an institution a few weeks before the various inter-high events all over three different provinces, has again attracted nearly 30 relay teams this year.
This unique event, which is based on a model that is very popular in America, was presented again at the Tuks Athletics Stadium this year.
The event is the ideal opportunity for the relay teams of participating schools to test themselves against proper opposition shortly before the respective inter-high events of the year. Last week schools from every corner of Gauteng were represented at the event, while schools from Limpopo and North West also participated.
This year a total of 28 schools participated in the event, while a few independent teams were also part of the action.
Participants competed in two divisions this year, namely large and medium schools. In each division there were also three categories, consisting of competitions for boys, girls and a combined overall competition.
The teams then compete in 4x400m relays, as well as 4x100m relay races within the framework of these categories and also in the five different age groups.
Local schools in Pretoria walked away with all the prizes this year.
Hoërskool Waterkloof was named the winner of the overall section for large schools this year, while Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool and Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool won the boys and girls divisions respectively.
Among medium schools Midstream College from Centurion made a clean sweep by winning all three categories.
The quality of the participants in this year’s competition was confirmed by the fact that six new records were set during the action.
The best performance of the day was also delivered by a local team. The Tuks Sports School’s u.15 boys finished their 4x100m relay race in an astounding time of 43.24s.
