One of the most popular club rugby stars in Pretoria died on Saturday after being injured in a car accident.

One of the best known and most popular rugby players in the Blue Bulls’ Carlton Cup league, Anton Beswick of ABE Midas Naka Bulls, died tragically this past weekend, after suffering serious injuries in a car accident.

Beswick was not only one of ABE Midas Naka Bulls’ biggest stars on the field over the past seven seasons, but he was also one of the true characters in the Carlton Cup league, who was loved by friend and foe. This is evidenced by the large quantity of messages of shock and sadness on social media from the entire rugby community in Pretoria since Beswick’s death became known on Saturday.

The popular flyhalf /centre was still in action in a trial match at his club on Friday. His last match for ABE Midas Naka Bulls was in the finals of the 2021 club leagues, when he led his club’s second team to be crowned champions against the Tuks Fezelas.

Beswick matriculated at Hoërskool Ben Vorster in Tzaneen. As a schoolboy he was already a standout on the sports field and after matric he played for SWD for two seasons in George. After that he moved to Pretoria, where he played fifteen man and sevens rugby for Tuks and was also a star in the Blue Bulls’ sevens rugby team, which was crowned national champion for three consecutive seasons.

Beswick had strong leadership qualities and he led ABE Midas Naka Bulls on the field several times. In 2018 he was also named captain of the Loftus 200 team, which played at Loftus Versfeld against the professional team of the Falcons.

After following his provincial sevens rugby coach, Marinus van der Watt, to the ABE Midas Naka Bulls club in 2015, Beswick was also selected in between to play provincial rugby for the Limpopo Blue Bulls for two seasons.

No funeral arrangements were known at the time of going to press. However, the ABE Midas Naka Bulls club will host a memorial function at their clubhouse in honour of Beswick on Tuesday evening at 18:00.
