Centurion’s Sutherland High School crowned as Pretoria C-bond athletics champion
While the best spirit in many years prevailed at the Pretoria C-bond athletics event on Wednesday, the action on the track was just as exciting and it was especially the titanic battle between the biggest and smallest schools at the event that caused drama and tension.
Sutherland High School from Centurion was crowned the new champion of the Pretoria C-bond athletics event on Wednesday at the Pilditch track in Pretoria West.
However, it was not easy for this school from the south of the city, which ended up with 2424 points. They were locked in a titanic battle throughout the day with Curro Hazeldean, who eventually finished with 2346, just 78 points behind them in second place.
Curro Hazeldean was followed by Uitsig High School (2009 points); Hoërskool Erasmus from Bronkhorstspruit (1937 points); Hoërskool Hartbeespoort (1834 points); Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz (1746 points); HTS John Vorster (1370 points); Pretoria Boys High (1194 points) and Pretoria High School for Girls (984 points).
It was Curro Hazeldean’s boys in particular who performed exceptionally well by winning the boys’ division. This while schools such as Pretoria Boys High and HTS John Vorster have more boys in their schools than the total number of pupils at Curro Hazeldean.
Sutherland’s girls made the difference for their school by winning the girls’ division.
The standard of athletics at this event was remarkably high. The total of 18 meeting records that were improved, testify to this. In several events, more than one athlete managed to improve the old record.
The top athlete of the day was Matadz Ndou from Curro Hazeldean. This under-16 boy won both the 110m hurdles (13.98s; 910 APE points) and the 400m hurdles (53.26s; 912 APE points) in his age group with new record times.
For his achievements, Ndou was awarded as hurdles athlete of the event, as well as Senior Victor Ludorum.
Paballo Radebe (u.19), also from Curro Hazeldean, was named Senior Victrix Ludorum for her achievements in the 800m, 1500m and 3000.
The Junior Victor Ludorum was Modisane Makobe (Curro Hazeldean) and the title as Junior Victrix Ludorum of the event went to Jasmine Collet (Curro Hazeldean).
The presentation of the event this year was a joint effort by Pretoria Boys High and Pretoria High School for Girls. These two schools’ arrangements were excellent and the program was able to run smoothly.
Sutherland’s day could not have ended better. Apart from the fact that they won the event on the track, this school’s spectators could not be overlooked on the pavilion either. Their bright red outfits made them stand out, while they were also contributing to a large degree to the very good spirit that prevailed. For this, Sutherland was additionally rewarded with the Spirt Trophy.
Following the results at this event, Sutherland High School will move up to the B-bond next year, while it looks like Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz will be the school that will be relegated to the D-bond.
