Pretoria E-bond inter-high athletics emphasizes the rise of the private schools

The Pretoria E-bond athletics inter-high was presented on Monday at the Pilditch stadium and the action was dominated by one of the emerging private schools that participate in this league.

Private schools in and around Pretoria are slowly but surely making their mark on school sports fields. This was proven by the results of several of the inter-high athletics meetings that have taken place in the Capital City since Monday.

The emergence of the private schools was especially evident on Monday at the Pilditch stadium during the E-bond meeting, where three private schools were involved. Two of these schools dominated the results and were in a battle for first place.

Eventually, Heron Bridge College (2236.5 points) from the far south (Nietgedach near Fourways) walked away with the laurels, while Woodhill College (2143 points) from the east side of the city finished second. The other private school in this league was Curro Roodelplaat, which finished seventh.

These two participants were followed by one of Pretoria’s oldest high schools, Hoërskool Langenhoven (2112.5 points); Hoërskool Staatspresident CR Swart from the Moot area (1950.5 points); Hoërskool Silverton (1776.5 points); The Glen High School (1718 points); Curro Roodelplaat (1683 points) and HTS Tuine (1411 points).

The girls team of Heron Bridge College (1149 points) made a decisive contribution to their success, while their boys (1087.5) finished second in this division after Langenhoven (1137 points).

CR Swart’s boys (1012) were third, followed by Woodhill College (996); Silverton (992); Curro Roodeplaat, The Glen (860) and HTS Tuine (723.5). In the girls’ division, Woodhill College’s (1147) team certainly did their part as well. They were followed by Langenhoven (975.5); CR Swart (938.5); The Glen (900); Curro Roodeplaat (860) and Silverton (784.5) and HTS Tuine (687.5).

The event was hosted by HTS Tuine, who will unfortunately be relegated to the F-bond in 2025. On the other hand, Heron Bridge College will compete in the D-bond next year.

As far as the standard of the athletics is concerned, the total of 45 E-bond records that were improved on the day testify that things are definitely getting better in these ranks. This figure means that new records were set in more than a third of the 138 items on the program.

The action of the day produced some star performances. In terms of the quality of these performances, the achievements of Heron Bridge College’s Lolwethu Makasi in the sprint items stand out. She ran the 100m for girls u.17 in a dazzling new record time of 12.65s, while she did even better in the 200m, where she also set a new record in 25.24s.

Caleb Webb of Heron Bridge College was responsible for three new records. He won the 200m for u.17 boys in a time of 22.95s, then set the new record in the 400m with his time of 53.91s and his third record for the day was set in the long jump event, where he jumped 6.32m far.

Another athlete who caught the eye was Katlego Kakana from Langenhoven, who won the 1500m for boys u.19 in a new record time of 4:26.45m, after which he smashed the record in the 3000m when his time of 10;02.87m was almost a minute faster than the previous record.
