Glory for Hoërskool Tuine at D-bond inter-high school
Last year they had to settle for fourth place, but on Tuesday Hoërskool Tuine dramatically topped the charts when they were crowned as this year's D-bond inter-high athletics champion after a day of action and excitement in the Pilditch stadium.
Hoërskool Tuine will participate in the Pretoria C-bond athletics inter-high next year, after this school’s athletes fended off a stubborn challenge from two opponents at the Pilditch stadium on Tuesday to emerge as champions at the Pretoria D-league inter-high.
This event was probably one of the toughest D-bond competitions in many years. Tuine was in a battle on the scoreboard with Lyttelton Manor High School and Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz throughout the day, while HTS John Vorster and Hoërskool FH Odendaal were also constantly on the heels of the top three.
Ultimately, Tuine emerged as the winner with a total of 2272 points. Lyttelton Manor was second with 2132 points, while Gerrit Maritz finished third with 2101 points. Then followed HTS John Vorster (2084), FH Odendaal (2075), Heron Bridge College (1780), Woodhill College (1664) and Hoërskool Langenhoven (1625).
This result therefore means that Hoërskool Langenhoven will be relegated to compete in the E-bond next year, while they will be replaced by Willowridge High School, who were crowned E-bond champions on Monday.
HTS John Vorster’s boys’ team easily won their division, but the school still has too few girls to make them a bigger athletic force in the overall team competition. Their girls team finished seventh. In the boys division, John Vorster was followed by Tuine, Lyttelton Manor, Gerrit Maritz, FH Odendaal, Langenhoven, Heronbridge College and Woodhill College.
FH Odendaal won the girls’ division, followed by Tuine, Heronbridge College, Gerrit Maritz, Lyttelton Manor, Woodhill College, HTS John Vorster and Langenhoven.
The event, which took place in mainly cloudy but humid weather conditions, was superbly hosted by Lyttelton Manor. The school did a brilliant job of making all the logistical arrangements run smoothly.
Athletes from the eight schools did their part and a total of 15 D-bond records were broken during the event.
Enrique Bruyns, an u.17 athlete from Hoërskool Tuine, was the star of the day on the track. The speedster set two new event records, while also being one of only two athletes to achieve a performance worth more than 800 points on Athletics SA’s Athletics Performance Evaluation (APE) table.
Bruyns was also the only athlete at the event to break the 11-second barrier in the 100m sprint. His new record time in the 100m race for boys u.17 was 10.73s, which is worth 862 APE points.
However, that was not the end of this boy’s heroics. He also won the long jump in a new record distance of 6.65m (800 APE points).
The other athlete who managed to earn more than 800 APE points was Kealoboga Mathebe from Hoërskool FH Odendaal. Mathebe won the 200m for girls u.14 in a new record time of 27.19s (803 APE points). She crossed the finish line more than two seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. She also won the 100m race for girls u.14 in 13.28s.
Another performance that stands out is Jandré Coetzee of HTS John Vorster’s new shot put record for boys u.15. With his distance of 13.59m (4kg weight), he not only erased a 17-year-old record, but also made the iron ball land a full two metres further than his nearest opponent.
