Near-tragedy caused by fire crackers

A dog so frightened by fireworks, jumped a fence and in its state of panic, severely attacked a toddler last week.

A two-year-old girl from Rietfontein was severely injured when a dog, spooked into panic by fire crackers, attacked her out of the blue, badly biting her in the face.

“I have no doubt that the fire crackers set off by someone nearby were to blame for the attack on my little girl,” the mother of the toddler, who asked that her child’s name not be published, said.

The mother said that on the day before Christmas, they were visiting friends. The small sized dog of mixed breed was placed behind a fence in the back yard but when someone in the area started setting off crackers and fireworks, the dog became so frantic that it jumped the fence.

“We have dogs of our own at home and we all, including my little girl, love dogs and are used to pets,” she said.

In a panic and in a frantic attempt to flee the noise of the crackers, the dog simply bit her daughter in her face, causing serious wounds.

The toddler had to go for stitches but, according to the doctor, because she was still so very young, should not have permanent scars from the attack, the mother said.

She urged residents not to set off fireworks and crackers over the New Year festivities.

“I have now seen first-hand what damage can be done by doing something as stupid as setting off a cracker,” she said.
