Two men burnt after transformer explodes
Two people sustained severe burns while working on an electrical transformer at Monash University in Roodeport, on the West Rand.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics and rescue unit arrived on scene on Saturday at about 8:19pm and found one man sustained 50 per cent burns while the other sustained 20 per cent burns, Roodepoort Record reported.
“Medics worked fervently to stabilise the men at the scene and airlifted one critically injured patient,” he added.
“The other patient was transported by ambulance to a specialised facility for the care that he required,” said Botha.
Last month, an unidentified man sustained serious burns to his arm and neck after a fire broke outin a Gus Brown Road residence in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal.
Amanzimtoti Fire Department divisional commander Anton Swardling said the man, who works for a pest-control company, was spraying chemicals in the house’s roof at about 9am when an explosion took place.
“They thought the electricity had been cut off, which wasn’t, and the flammable chemicals he was using ignited when it came into contact with the electricity. The electricity should have been isolated,” he said.
The house’s geyser also exploded, and the house sustained water damage along with fire damage to the ceiling, where the fire had to be contained.
The injured man was treated on scene by ER24 paramedics. He was transported to hospital.
