MAKHADO – Brig Genl Schalk van Heerden, commander of Air Force Base Makhado (AFB) urged members of the base to preserve the environment for the benefit of the community.
Speaking at a tree planting ceremony at AFB Makhado on September 6, Van Heerden told members to leave a legacy behind by planting trees that will benefit future generations. He said nature played an important role in people’s lives and therefore people should take good care of the land.
A total of 11 trees were planted as part of national Arbour Week, and they included White Stink Wood, Wild Olive and Karree. Van Heerden made an appeal to all delegates not to cut or burn trees. He said trees prevented erosion while providing food, warmth, fire, fruit, shade and even medicine.
