‘New’ Northern Academy is almost completely done

The "new" Northern Academy currently under construction is already 70% finished.

The “new” Northern Academy currently under construction is already 70% finished.

This is according to Martin van der Merwe, site agent of MNK Projects, who is responsible for this huge project.

Some 2,4 million bricks will have been used when the project is completed.

Completion needs to be done by December 20 when the construction industry takes their annual break, Van der Merwe said.

He said 1,9 million bricks have been laid by the 489 workers on site.

With 13 sub-contractors, of which seven are local sub-contractors, busy building, laying mortar, plastering, painting, doing roofing, all under the supervision of three foremen, the site is humming with activity.

The new Northern Academy campus’ facilities will be based on the academy’s existing facilities and will include the following:

• Forty primary and high school classrooms to accommodate 32 learners per class;

• Hostel facilities for both primary and high school learners;

• A multipurpose hall to be used for catering and school functions;

• A kitchen, laundry, sick bay, clothing shop and cafeteria;

• An enlarged administration facility including meeting rooms, offices and staff rooms; and

• Sports facilities: two soccer fields and six multipurpose hard surface courts.

The school will be able to accommodate 2 000 learners in 2014 and registration has already opened.
