The club was victorius at the Provincial Schools Sports Chess Tournament, which was held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday.
Representing the Capricorn district, the school beat four other schools.
All teams played five rounds. Refentse Primary School from Sekhukhune district was in second place, Chumana Primary School from Waterberg district was third, Thibedi Primary School from Mopani district was fourth and Shavani Primary School from Vhembe district was in fifth place.
Brussels’ principal and chess coach, Daniel Kobe said the team was well prepared for the tournament and would not relax after winning the provincial tournament.
“We are going to practise more to prepare for the national tournament,” said Kobe.
He thanked the players for showing composure throughout the tournament. He said the team wanted to win the national tournament with a technical knockout.
“We are not going to give our competitors a chance to play further. The learners can win goodies at the national tournament, which includes R100 000 worth of scholarship to study chess at the Chess Excellence Academy.”
Asaf Mosema, a member of Brussels’ chess club said he hoped to win the scholarship.
