Two Limpopo teachers made the province proud when they received accolades during the 2013 Star in Education Awards.
Dungile Maponya from Batlokwa Secondary School, who runs Dungile Training Maths and Science Centre, a project that offers extra classes for mathematics, science and commercial subjects to high school learners in the Mogalakwena municipality, was the top winner in the national competition.
She was awarded for her dedication to improving mathematics achievement in her community through sheer determination and persistence.
She has presented papers on mathematics education and curriculum changes at international symposia, as well as pursue her masters while inspiring her former learners, who have subsequently returned home to assist her in running these camps, to become mathematics and science teachers. Maponya said she was proud of her achievement. Mabore Lekalakala from Toronto Primary School in Polokwane was awarded for her work in Computer Adventures to Discover Mathematics.
Lekalakala was praised for her energy in helping gr. 5 learners by creating an environment for them to create fun computer learning resources that simplify challenging mathematics concepts, while teaching other learners how to use technology and understand mathematics.
She connected to learners through modules that engaged them in learning oriented activities.
The awards were part of an October month earmarked project to celebrate and honour teachers, while acknowledging them for the crucial role they play in the lives of young learners, as well as for their excellent contribution to society. The project is now in its sixth year. It is also meant to award teachers who go an extra mile on an extra curricular basis.
It is the brainchild of Argo, the publisher and multi-media communications company that focusses on informing learners.
Argo CEO, Sue Fontannaz said the winners were an example of how teachers must go the extra mile to help learners.
