Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day was celebrated on November 11. This is a memorial day to remember members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty since the first World War.
Michell House College had a special assembly to celebrate Remembrance Day on Monday, during which the headmaster, Andrew Cook spoke to the learners about the day.
“It is easy to think of Remembrance Day as an outmoded colonialist thing to commemorate. To put it into perspective, my grandfather’s brother was killed in action in 1916,” said Cook.
“Since the end of the second World War, there have been other wars which have claimed the lives of many brave men and women. So today we look back and remember the ultimate sacrifice of so many. Their sacrifice inspires us to take up the fight against our common enemies like poverty, corruption and greed.”
Cook ended the assembly by saying: “Let us not remain unmoved by the suffering of others simply because it is so common, but take arms to end it, so that we, too, along with so many in the world can say at the going down of the sun and in the morning we shall remember them”.
There was a two-minute silence in respect of the fallen heroes.
