ANC Waterberg secretary kidnapped, assaulted and left for dead in car

ANC regional secretary in Waterberg, Tollie Mashamaite, was brutally assaulted and left for dead in the boot of his car last weekend.

MOKOPANE – ANC regional secretary in Waterberg, Tollie Mashamaite, was brutally assaulted and left for dead in the boot of his car last weekend.

Provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said Mashamaite was kidnapped from Mokopane on Sunday, January 19 by three men wielding firearms. Mulaudzi said they drove along the Steiloop road with Mashamaite, where he was viciously assaulted, and then put into the boot of the car.

“They vanished with his cash and cellphones. He was found by a passerby who saw a car parked in the bush on Monday. The passerby heard a sound from the boot of the car. He forced the boot open and found Mashamaite who seemed badly injured.

“The matter was reported to the police and he was rushed to hospital for treatment. No arrests have been made and police investigations are underway,” Mulaudzi said.

Spokesperson for the ANC provincial task team, Sello Lediga, said they were still in shock. “The ANC condemns the attack and calls on the police to leave no stone unturned in their investigations.

“As an organisation, we call upon all our members and the community at large to cooperate with all the law enforcement agencies in an endeavour to trace and finally bring to justice these cowardly criminals,” he said.

He called on all ANC leaders to be vigilant as they travelled around the province. “We do not as yet know the motive of the attackers of our regional secretary who was only elected to office in December 2013. Justice must be done,” Lediga said.
