Report accident with or without other party

The police allegedly refused to assist a teenage boy who was involved in an accident on the corner of Paul Kruger and Thabo Mbeki Streets between 13:00 and 14:00 last Monday.

POLOKWANE – The police allegedly refused to assist a teenage boy who was involved in an accident on the corner of Paul Kruger and Thabo Mbeki Streets between 13:00 and 14:00 last Monday.

The driver of a white Nissan Sentra allegedly turned in front of the 18-year-old, who was riding on his motorcycle.

There were no serious injuries, but the teenager’s motorcycle was badly damaged and the total cost of repairs added up to R10 000.

His sister, Veruscha Meiring said they did open a case at the Polokwane police station, but they needed the details of the other party to make arrangements for the repairs of the bike.

“The police that were on the scene refused to give my brother any details of the other party and they were very rude. When my father came on the scene and asked the police for the details and explained that it was for insurance purposes, the police threatened to arrest my father,” she explained.

Capt Ntobeng Phala, Polokwane police spokesperson said an accident must be reported within 48 hours because failing to do so was a criminal offence and a charge of failing to report an accident within the stipulated timeframe could be brought against the person, especially where injuries were sustained.

“In the event of an accident, the parties involved must keep calm. Take the vehicle registration number if the person refuses to go with you to the police station or to exchange information. Then go to the nearest police station and report the accident,” Phala explained.

He added that the city was monitored by municipal CCTV footage, and the complainant could also approach the municipality requesting this footage as evidence. “We will investigate the allegation regarding this accident and give feedback as soon as possible,” Phala said.
