POLOKWANE – An opportunity to showcase sporting talent and bring the community together was how Westenburg residents described the Westenburg Easter Sports Festival, which took place on Saturday and Sunday.
More than 4 000 people attended the event, which was organised by the Westenburg Rugby Club, in partnership with the Eagles Bikers Club.
About 200 bikers supported the event from various motorcycle clubs such as Eagles Midrand, Eagles Limpopo, Ghost Riders, Urban Fellas Motorcycle Club, Unicorn Bikers, Sapa Yopa Motorcycling Club and individual riders.
The bikers held a mass ride through Westenburg late Saturday afternoon.
Different sporting codes were played at the festival, which included, men’s and women’s soccer, netball, dominos, pool and a potjiekos competition.
There was also a last man standing competition where the contestants had to down a quart of beer.
There was also a soccer match between members of the Eagles Bikers Club and members of Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club, where Eagles won 3-1.
Francois Hartlief, Westenburg Rugby Club chairperson said a child in sport stayed out of court.
“We should participate in sport throughout the year and not just during Easter. A special thank you to Job Freeman, the owner of Polokwane Auto Speedshop, which was the main sponsor of the festival and to all the other sponsors,” Hartlief said.
Hartlief added that he was looking forward to next year’s event.
“Eagles confirmed that they will be there, bigger and better. We already have teams from Middelburg, Witbank and Pretoria confirming their participation in next year’s event. As usual, Westenburg Rugby Club will also try to improve and make it more fun for the whole family.
On behalf of the Westenburg Rugby Club, thank you for all your support and excellent behaviour at this event,” he said.
