BUSH school surgeon Scotch Malesela from Mogalakwena had already circumcised more than 50 boys since the initiation school period began on Friday.
Malesela said boys who had medical certificates confirming that they suffered with conditions such as asthma, were taken special care of so that they would come through their initiations without complications.
He said he was expecting to circumcise thousands of boys before the closing date on July 18.
“I don’t allow food to be brought in from outside and cook for the initiates myself. I work hand-in-hand with the traditional leaders, environmental inspectorate and department of health,” he said.
“I’m lucky that a farmer nearby allows us to fetch water from his borehole. I don’t want my boys to suffer dehydration. We also dig pit toilets, so that there is no health hazard.”
Malesela said government should punish those who contravened the law.
“I will close the school on July 18, as per agreement,” he said.
“The department of cooperative governance, human settlement and traditional affairs should impose strict laws on surgeons regarding hygiene. They must disqualify surgeons who drink alcohol while on duty,” Malesela concluded.
