Senior counsel takes over Shebeshxt appeal

Shebeshxt's High Court appeal was temporarily removed from the roll after his legal team appointed senior counsel Laurence Hodes to take over the matter.

POLOKWANE – Lekompo musician Lehlogonolo “Shebeshxt” Chauke’s appeal matter was temporarily removed from the roll at the High Court in Polokwane on Thursday, June 12.

Senior counsel appointed

Shebeshxt’s legal representative, Michael Khumalo, said they had received instructions from their client to appoint senior counsel Laurence Hodes to handle the matter.

“We were instructed by our client to brief senior counsel Laurence Hodes. We have issued the brief to him, and he has accepted it. He is currently going through the court papers and will be taking over the matter,” said Khumalo.

Khumalo emphasised that Hodes will serve as the advocate in the case while he remains the instructing attorney.

“He will be the advocate on record, and not just an advocate, but a senior counsel,” he added.

Request unopposed

According to Khumalo, a request for the matter to be removed from the roll was presented to the judge to allow the newly appointed senior counsel sufficient time to familiarise himself with the case.

The request was not opposed, and all parties agreed to have the matter removed from the roll temporarily.

Next court appearance

Chauke is expected to appear before the Polokwane Regional Court on July 10 for pre-trial proceedings in a separate matter.
