Westenburg Secondary School to use donation for better learning

POLOKWANE – Learning will now be more fun and much easier at Westenburg Secondary School thanks to MTN Limpopo who donated 20 computers, a laptop, projector and a printer all worth over R100 000 to the school on Monday morning.
This was an initiative by MTN Limpopo personnel as part of their 21 days of Yello Care initiative.
The 21 Days of Yellow Care initiative, an annual staff volunteerism programme, was instituted by the MTN Group president and CEO in 2007 as a demonstration of MTN’s commitment to look beyond its core operations by encouraging its employees to reach out to the communities within which it operates with diverse sustainable social interventions meant to enrich the lives of those communities.
This year’s 21 days of Yello Care had the theme: Investing in Education for All.
“That is why we invested in education by choosing a school that did not have computers or even a printer. The school would go to the department of education every time they needed to print something. And in this day and age we cannot have learners in high school not being able to access computers or even use computers, as everything revolves around technology,” said Sammy Southon, the MTN regional manager for Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
“We also created a website for the school as well as an e-mail address and we will make student cards for the learners at the beginning of next term. The computers will all be installed with curriculum software and we applied for an E-rate billing for the school with Internet usage. We will also have our IT staff coming in to assist the learners and train the teachers and learners on how to use the computers,” said Mary-Jane Mokatse, the MTN regional marketing manager.
Acting principal, Bettie Boom said: “we are very happy today and thankful to MTN for all this equipment. MTN heard our prayers, as we had a need for computers at our school. Not having computers was a disadvantage for learners because the matriculants went off to tertiary without any knowledge of computers, and they struggle. We are really grateful to MTN, may God bless you for this wonderful work you have done”.
