Trailer’s piggyback ride on parked car

POLOKWANE – A quick stop at a shopping centre in the city last week ended in a shocking experience for Emsie Austen.
Austen said when she came out of one of the shops in Genl Viljoen Street, she discovered that a trailer landed on top of her car.
“I saw something was not right and had to blink a few times to make sure what I was seeing really happened. The trailer was on its back wheels with more than half of the front part resting on my car’s rear,” Austen said.
When she asked the owner of the trailer how the incident happened, he said he was travelling down Genl Viljoen Street towards Potgie-ter Avenue when the trailer broke free from the bakkie on a speed bump and landed on her vehicle.
She said the damage to her car was estimated at R33 000 and included the replacement of the vehicle’s boot as well as the back window and a paint job.
The details of the repairs are still to be finalised by Austen and the owner of the trailer.
Mpho Mokgehle, a traffic official, urged motorists to drive safely at all times and to reduce their speed when approaching speed bumps.
He urged people to report reckless driving to the traffic department, along with the culprit’s registration number.
