MEC’s PhD research tackles Limpopo’s irregular expenditure

MEC Dr Tshitereke Matibe's PhD research produced a new oversight model to reduce irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure in Limpopo.

LIMPOPO – Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has praised MEC Dr Tshitereke Matibe for his academic research that may have lasting benefits for Limpopo’s finances.

Matibe, the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet), graduated with a PhD in public administration from the University of Venda last week.

His doctoral research focused on making Scopa – the Standing Committee on Public Accounts – more effective at catching irregular, fruitless and wasteful spending.

What his research found

Matibe’s study examined how Scopa could strengthen financial oversight and accountability within Limpopo’s provincial government.

His research produced a new oversight model aimed at reducing irregular expenditure in government departments and municipalities.

Matibe said his experience in the Limpopo Legislature, including serving as deputy speaker, motivated his focus on improving Scopa’s effectiveness.

Premier celebrates the achievement

At a congratulatory luncheon held at Lira Boutique near Nandoni Dam, Premier Ramathuba described the journey to a PhD as “a long and gruelling marathon” requiring sacrifice, resilience and intellectual endurance.

“We gather today to celebrate an extraordinary milestone that very few in this world achieve. Huge congratulations on officially earning your PhD,” she said.

Ramathuba said Matibe’s success was proof that perseverance through academic pressure, isolation and setbacks ultimately leads to recognition.

“You conquered the mountain. Your hard work has fully paid off and your brilliance is officially recognised,” she said.

From Mufulwi village to PhD

Matibe, who also serves as ANC Vhembe regional chairperson, was born in Mufulwi village near Matavhela in the Mutale area.

Ramathuba said Matibe’s achievement demonstrated that perseverance and commitment can elevate anyone, regardless of background, and should inspire others to pursue success through hard work and dedication.
