Pipe damage wastes water

Litres of water were wasted after a water pipe was damaged on the corner of Veldspaat Street and Zune Avenue

Litres of water were wasted after a water pipe was damaged on the corner of Veldspaat Street and Zune Avenue on Monday afternoon.

The water streamed from the corner where the pipe was damaged down Veldspaat Street into the N1 North heading to Makhado.

The pipe, supplying water to the South African Breweries (SAB), was damaged due to ongoing cable installations in the city, which the municipality says they are not a part of.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene said their team excavated the area until 22:00 when they found that the 370mm pipe had a 200mm hole underneath.

“We are working around the clock to have the pipe fully repaired by this afternoon (Tuesday).

“There was never an intention to waste water as municipal officials had already closed the valve at the reservoirs when they started excavating.

“Because the area is low laying all the water which was already in the pipe had to go out in order to allow our technicians to work on the pipe,” she said. Chuene added that for speedy resolution of water and sanitation challenges, residents are encouraged to call the municipality at (015) 290 2376 or the call centre at (015) 290 2000.
