Danger lurks in muni’s open electrical boxes

Exposed high-voltage electrical cables are still a cause for concern among residents in the city.

Exposed high-voltage electrical cables are still a cause for concern among residents in the city.

It would appear as if a combination of vandalism and negligence could be the reason for the cables being left exposed.

According to a resident, Petro Nortje, one example of this can be found at the complex where she lives in Jorissen Street.

She said she first came across the damaged electrical box in September when she saw children playing around it and went to investigate.

She reported the matter to the municipality immediately. Four weeks later, nothing had been done to repair or secure that specific electrical box.

“Children are curious little beings and this is an open invitation for them to explore, not realising the real danger.

“How can the municipality in all good conscience ignore complaints like these,” she questioned.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said vandalism was still a great concern to the municipality and urged residents to report these incidents as soon as possible. She could not, however, explain why the matter had not been attended to.

Any concerns regarding electricity can be reported to the municipality at (015) 290 2000, following the prompts, or by dialling (015) 290 2270.
