6 die in a head-on collision

Six people died in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a sedan along the Polokwane-Jane Furse road at Lebowakgomo, zone F on Thursday afternoon.

LEBOWAKGOMO – THE police have asked motorists to take extra care and to be patient on the roads as the festive season approaches.

This comes after six people died in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a sedan along the Polokwane-Jane Furse road at Lebowakgomo, zone F on Thursday afternoon.

Lebowakgomo police spokesperson, Capt Mamphaswa Seabi said one of the two vehicles involved was reportedly overtaking another vehicle when the accident occurred. No other vehicles were involved. Seabi said there were three people in the minibus taxi and four people in the sedan.

He said all the passengers in the sedan and two of the occupants of the minibus taxi died and their bodies were burned beyond recognition.

“The impact of the collision sent both vehicles in opposite directions. The minibus taxi caught fire immediately after the vehicles collided and a few minutes thereafter the sedan caught fire. A passerby saw the accident and managed to open the door of the minibus taxi and free the driver of the vehicle. Seemingly the passerby did not see the other passengers in the minibus taxi and he drove away from the scene after he rescued the driver of the minibus taxi,” Seabi said.

The driver of the minibus taxi was rushed to the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital with serious injuries.

“The man is still in the intensive care unit of the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital. We are investigating a case of culpable homicide. No arrests have been made yet. We are still investigating the cause of the accident and fire,” Seabi said.
