“The identities of the family have not yet been confirmed at this stage. Police investigations are continuing…” said Col Tembinkosi Kinana.
He said no one had been taken in for questioning.
He refused to disclose how the family was killed, or a possible motive.
It is believed the father, 55, mother, 54, and 22-year-old son were attacked in their home in the De Zalze Golf Estate in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Lt-Col Andre Traut said a 16-year-old daughter and 20-year-old son were injured and admitted to a nearby hospital.
The Cape Argus on Wednesday identified the family as Martin van Breda, his wife Teresa, and their three children Rudi, 22, Henri, 20 and 16-year-old Marli.
Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert Daniels said he could only comment on the wounds of the patient they treated and not those who were killed.
“The patient [Marli] had an axe wound to the head. The jugular was severed,” he said.
The medical facility where the girl was being treated was not immediately available to confirm her condition.
