Learners relieved to be able to attend classes at Luthuli

High school learners who attended school at Luthuli Park Combined School breathed a huge sigh of relief after the school decided to accommodate them again this year.

POLOKWANE – High school learners who attended school at Luthuli Park Combined School breathed a huge sigh of relief after the school decided to accommodate them again this year.

This followed after the school governing body (SGB) decided not to admit any high school learners, and to cater for primary school only learners this year.

High school learners were shocked on the first day of the new school year to be turned away when they arrived for school.

On Sunday, the SGB met with parents to discuss the matter.

SGB chairperson, Raymond Manyaka, said the school had decided to accommodate high school learners in mobile classes until the department built a high school in the area.

“Every year the department tells us they will build a school but nothing has happened for six years.

“We have had enough and we want them to include us in the 2015/16 budget and build a high school in the area,” he said. He added that this situation was an emergency and the department needed to take them seriously.

“We have been waiting for the department for seven years now, and we can’t afford to wait any longer.

“The last time we met with the department, they said they would take us into consideration in the 2016/17 budget, which we did not approve of. Then we were told that the matter was being dealt with by the administrator as the department had been put under administration,” he explained.

Paena Galane, education spokesperson, was not available for comment by the time of going to print.
