Malamulele High to relocate
THE acting MEC for education, Jerry Ndou said he was touched by the situation at Malamulele High School.
LIMPOPO – THE acting MEC for education, Jerry Ndou said he was touched by the situation at Malamulele High School.
The MEC visited the school on Friday, where he spoke with parents and assessed the situation after six of the school’s administration blocks were torched during the recent total shut-down of services in the area by the community of Malamulele, who demanded their own stand-alone municipality.
“As I came through the gate into this school, the first thing that touched me was seeing learners moving around holding chairs, which indicated there’s a shortage of chairs in this school,” said the MEC, while speaking to the parents.
He assured them that the learners would receive learning material and mobile classrooms while the department tried to fix the situation. He also confirmed that the school would be relocated to new premises outside the central business district, something which the school governing body (SGB) had been complaining about for years, saying the current environment was not conducive for learning due to high noise pollution.
“I am very disappointed that it took 10 years to move this school because it should have taken less than six months to relocate it,” said Ndou, adding that the department would work with the SGB and teachers to ensure the speedy building process of the new school.
According to Ndou, the construction of the new school will start in June. He said for the time being, the learners would have to make do with mobile classes, which he said would be provided before the end of March, along with study material.
“Since you cannot relocate to the new school this year because it still has to be built, we will send temporary mobile classes and toilets to help you continue your studies in safe classrooms,” he said to the learners.
The SGB chairperson, Hasani Hlungwani, said they were happy that the MEC touched on their request for a new school, saying their prayers had finally been answered.
