POLOKWANE – Learners from five high schools in and around the city visited Ster-Kinekor at Mall of the North to watch two movies about career choices last Sunday morning.
This outing was part of a Ned-bank initiative, My Future, My Career, in partnership with the department of basic education, the National Youth Development Agency, the South-African Institute of Chartered Accounts, the JD Group, SIYAKHA Education Trust, AECI, and Tsogo Sun.
The learners were very excited to be part of this national initiative where 14 shows would be screened over seven weeks, divided into two episodes per weekend.
Last Sunday’s selected movies were about careers in computers, information technology and communication.
The department of education selected the schools that were invited to view the screenings and each weekend learners from different schools had the opportunity to enjoy this experience.
Each school was allowed to send 50 learners on these excursions and there were buses available to transport the learners to and from Ster-Kinekor.
The aim of the project was to introduce the different South African career industries to learners so that they could identify career choices.
At the end of the 14 shows, a total of 24 000 learners would have viewed these screenings.
As learners arrived at Ster-Kinekor, they registered and received a booklet with information on careers, how to apply for bursaries after gr. 12, how to construct a CV, how to prepare for an interview and many other tips.
The learners watched the two movies from 09:00 until 12:00.
Thereafter they each received popcorn and a colddrink to take home.
The schools that attended Sunday’s screening were Seshego High School, Millennium Combined School, Mamolemane Secondary School, Khaiso High School, and Masedibu High School.
