Open boxes a worry
RESIDENTS of Greenside Extension 44 in Polokwane say they fear for their children's lives as several electricity boxes in the streets are open and accessible to anyone.
POLOKWANE – RESIDENTS of Greenside Extension 44 in Polokwane say they fear for their children’s lives as several electricity boxes in the streets are open and accessible to anyone.
One resident, Irvan Denhere, said they had raised the issue with the Polokwane Municipality several times but so far nothing had been done.
“It seems like the municipality does not care if someone gets hurt,” Denhere said.
Another concerned resident, Maria Maila, said the municipality should address the problem as a matter of urgency. She said besides children getting hurt or even losing their lives, there was also the danger that municipal property was stolen or vandalised.
“Our children are in danger; we cannot wait until a tragedy occurs before something is done,” she said.
Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said the boxes were mounted on poles and above ground level at a safe height, and no one could touch or make contact with live parts from ground level.
She said residents were safe.
“We would also like to warn residents about illegal connections, which could have the consequences of electrocution and overloading our circuit.
“If caught, perpetrators will be fined. We are in the process of repositioning all pole mounted boxes in the Seshego area including Greenside, by putting them on the ground.”
All electricity issues can be referred to the municipal energy services at (015) 290 2490.
