Award winning news

Capricorn Voice was the star in the Northern Media Group stable, winning the award as best national newspaper in the category for sold newspapers with a circulation of 8 000 and less.

TRUE to the theme of Caxton’s Excellence Awards evening last week, Africa was truly amazing as newspapers and journalists received accolades for a year’s hard work.

Capricorn Voice was the star in the Northern Media Group stable, winning the award as best national newspaper in the category for sold newspapers with a circulation of 8 000 and less.

Group editor, Joline Nash says even though the award came as a surprise, Capricorn Voice had been in the frontline for this award for a number of years. “We have experienced tremendous growth in terms of readership over the last few years as a result of an improved product. I believe the Capricorn Voice undoubtedly delivers to its audience. Its content is diverse and relevant, yet informative and entertaining at the same time. It truly is a paper for the people.”

Nash had much praise for the team behind the paper, including newcomer news editor, Thokozile Mnguni, whom she described as “a creative editor who is in touch with her readers”, assistant editor, Nyambeni Mandiwana, who “has proved himself as a professional and dedicated journalist whose efforts are admirable”, and all the freelance journalists across the province who contribute every week.

In commenting on the supreme standard offered by the Capricorn Voice, the judges said there was surely something “lovable” about the paper. “It consists of great stories, a good variety of topics, as well as neat and consistent layout. It is a pleasure to read and a newspaper deserving of a win in this category.”

The awards ceremony, looked forward to amid much anticipation annually, was held at the Johannesburg Theatre on Thursday evening. The master of ceremonies was Carol Tshabalala and entertainment included the world renowned Soweto Gospel Choir, a marimba group, Gangs of Ballet, Ashlinn Gray and Johnny Apple.

Other Northern Media Group contributors who were among the finalists included: Mukundi Mavhina and Marietjie Pretorius for advertisement design, Mogomane Seabi for headline writing and Catherine Robberts for telesales person of the year.
