SESHEGO – THE Seshego police station is currently inundated with murder cases, most of which happen over weekends.
Police are discouraging a seeming trend of angry residents taking the law into their own hands.
Three murders were reported over the Easter weekend.
Police have made significant strides in apprehending several suspects, who appeared in the magistrate’s court last week.
It has come to light that the bulk of these gruesome murders are not taking place in the township but in and out of the surrounding villages and newly-established RDP settlements.
At Luthuli Park’s 9L Section, Alfred Pheme (33) was arrested for the stabbing of Johannes Mokgaphane( 24).
According to police spokesperson WO Mothemane Malefo, Pheme stabbed Mokgaphane in the thigh which led to his death.
Pheme was subsequently arrested and denied bail in the Seshego magistrate’s court last Friday.
His case has been postponed to April 29 for another bail application.
At zone 8, an elderly woman was killed by her 33-year-old daughter who is believed to be mentally ill.
The daughter has since been taken for a psychological evaluation to determine if she is fit to stand for trial.
Police also arrested Jonas Nkoe (25) at Ga-Manamela for the killing of a man. According to Malefo, the victim was stabbed with a knife before he was rushed to DF Knoble hospital in Moletjie where he later died.
His attacker appeared in the Seshego magistrate’s court last Friday where he was denied bail. He too, will re-apply for bail on April 29.
Malefo said one death is too many. “We are conducting stop and go searches during our patrols in search of dangerous weapons that may be used to commit robberies, maim other people or even worse, kill them.
“We regularly raid taverns and other drinking joints to search for these weapons that could be used in the killings of other civilians. We do everything in our power to curb murder.”
