Illegal advertising a big problem

A large number of road signs and traffic lights have been illegally used as advertising posts in the city.

POLOKWANE – A large number of road signs and traffic lights have been illegally used as advertising posts in the city.

While advertisements may be legally placed on public facilities and structures which are not primarily intended for advertisement, such as benches, sidewalk litter bins and pole mounted bins and bus shelters, this does not include road signs or traffic lights.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said their traffic department was aware of the problem. “The signs seen on the stop signs are illegal and it is the responsibility of the traffic officers to take down these advertisements when found. A fine of R500 can be given to anyone who puts up these illegal adverts,” she warned.
