Radio station for Hip Hop fans
'The core purpose of Venrap is to give aspiring hip hop artists a platform to showcase their talent' station manager, Fhumulani Nemuhunguni
LIMPOPO – THE first South African online hip hop radio station, Venrap in Thohoyandou, has been operating for three years now, broadcasting 24 hours everyday.
According to the station manager, Fhumulani Nemuhunguni, who is popularly known as Nema wama Hunguni, the core purpose of the station is to give aspiring hip hop artists a platform to showcase their talent.
“The station is currently available on all Android, iPhones, Blackberries and some Nokia cell phones,” says Fhumulani.
He says they also motivate artists and give them advice on where to improve their music and production.
Fhumulani admits that starting the station has not been easy, but the public has received them so well and he thanks his team for their hard work.
“The team is dedicated and passionate about their work. We are an amazing team who work well together and always support one another,” he says.
Venrap team members are Miemie Nethomboni, Pfananani Mufamadi, Phathutshedzo Manwadu and Khathutshelo Nesindande.
The station has also opened an online music store, Venrap digital store, which Fhumulani says is a platform to empower upcoming hip hop artists who cannot sell their music in music stores.
Oriel Makhakha, CEO of Venrap digital store, says they want to assist unsigned and independent artists to have a better way to reach their fans.
He says the store was initially meant for Venda musicians only, but due to the demand, they now work with artists across Limpopo.
