POLOKWANE – The city’s mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng, has been true to her word and followed up with action when it comes to the repair and maintenance of the city’s streets.

Since the speech delivered by Nkadimeng during her state-of-the-city address on June 18 during which she mentioned that arterial roads were no longer the municipality’s responsibility but the department of public works, roads and infrastructure’s, as announced last year.

Since then the city’s streets have come alive. Nkadimeng said that thanks to the development regarding arterial roads, the municipality could now focus its resources towards the inner city streets that were in bad condition with many having reached their lifespan.

In various areas of the city municipal employees could also be seen eagerly repairing potholes and other road-related issues.

Nkadimeng said over the past four years the municipality had patched up over 129 000m² of road and maintained just over 9 276m² of sidewalks. She said that during the 2015/16 financial year an amount of R118 million was budgeted for the construction of access roads in rural areas. The municipality had received an additional R38 million reallocated from other municipalities to be distributed into existing roads projects. “These projects will not only benefit Polokwane, but also areas like Makotopong, Mankweng, Ga-Semenya, Sebayeng, Chebeng, Seshego and Ntshitshane.
