Artists encouraged to register with SAMRO

MUNGHANA Lonene FM station manager, James Shikwambana, advised Tshivenda music artists to register their work with the South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) and produce quality music.

LIMPOPO – MUNGHANA Lonene FM station manager, James Shikwambana, advised Tshivenda music artists to register their work with the South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) and produce quality music.

Shikwambana addressed musicians, traditional leaders and all people involved with the arts during the announcement of the Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima) final nominees at Joe Matsila Guest House in Elim on Saturday evening.

“Musicians must play their own work, not cover versions. They must create a legacy for their children. Many radio stations are still playing Bob Marley’s songs because it is original and not a cover version. His family is still collecting royalties from his talent. Phalaphala FM delivers 75% of music and out of that, 40% is Tshivenda music. These awards are giving you a platform and we encourage you to produce quality music,” said Shikwambana.

Chief Mkhiphitheni Matsila of the Matsila community said he would organise studios for local musicians and help them develop their talents.

“We are going to work with any artist who needs development. We don’t want to see our local musicians struggling to find record deals. It is very bad to be famous but die without any money in the bank,” said Matsila.

Nandi Ndalane, Limpopo MEC for sport, arts and culture, said the department concluded that 80% of artists invited to perform at festivals should come from the local community.

Five artists are nominated in each category, while 10 artists are nominated in the song of the year category.

Artist competing in the song of the year category:

• Muofhe for Ndzhieni.

• Prince Nyadzawela for Sendelani.

• Rabs Vhafuwi for Count Your Blessings.

• The late Mpho Regalo for Ndihone.

• Prifix for Lufuno.

• Naledzani Netshirembe for Vhambona.

• Sir Mclekker for Tapanyedza.

• C-Jay for Holly Hustle.

• Gadas for Tshibado.

• Cash Flow for Mukondeleli.

Regalo is also nominated for best male artist and best gospel artist.
