RAF comes to aid of Zim victims’ families

THE Road Accident Fund's (RAF) CEO, Eugene Watson, says they have committed to cover the funeral and repatriation costs after meeting with seven Zimbabwean families who lost their loved ones in a truck and taxi accident in Musina last Thursday.

LIMPOPO – THE Road Accident Fund’s (RAF) CEO, Eugene Watson, says they have committed to cover the funeral and repatriation costs after meeting with seven Zimbabwean families who lost their loved ones in a truck and taxi accident in Musina last Thursday.

Watson said seven people were killed when a taxi conveying Zimbabwean nationals and a truck collided on the N1 weighbridge traffic intersection at the Beitbridge border post.

He said those who were injured were receiving medical care at the Musina Hospital, as well as at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital.

“The RAF Limpopo team will consult with the bereaved families once again after the funerals to originate claims for loss of support for the surviving dependents and qualifying heads of damages for the surviving passengers. We have already sent our condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those killed in the accident. We also wished those recuperating in hospital a speedy recovery,” Watson said.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, said they had opened a culpable homicide docket, but the people who had died in the collission had not yet been identified by the time of going to print.

“All the deceased are from Zimbabwe,” Otto said. She confirmed that the truck driver survived the collision.

An eye-witness to the horrific crash, Lucas Mozile, said emergency workers had their hands full in attending to and dispatching all the injured people to hospital.

“It was one of the most traumatic occurrences I have ever seen,” he concluded.
