WATER SHORTAGE ALERT: ±70% of city’s reservoirs empty

The municipality will commence with issuing of on the spot fines of R1000 to anyone who is found watering gardens and washing cars and pavements with hosepipes.

POLOKWANE – Residents are warned to use water sparingly to avert possible water shortages in the city – reports of no water or low water pressure have already been noted in the high catchment areas.

“The levels at the reservoirs are critically low and most of them empty due to high usage. The municipality has reduced flow to low catchment areas in order to create room for the reservoirs to pick up, however the decline continues as a result of high water usage,” reads a media relase from a municipal spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene on Friday afternoon.

The water treatment plants in Seshego zone 4 and the one at Dalmada opposite PEPPS school have been opened to the public between 08:00 and 22:00.

Water tankers will make rounds between 16:00 and 22:00 in affected areas.

Affected areas include:

Flora Park, Serala View, Sterpark, Bendor and Thornhill,Madiba Park, Legae la Batho, parts of Seshego zone 2, 3, 8 and 5

By this morning the reservoir levels were reading as follows:

50ML=0%

New 30ML=0%

Old 30ML=0%

Potgieter=10%

Ext.34=95%

Seshego=0%

Chuene advises the residents to limit water consumption to immediate household needs and avoid irrigation of gardens, filling swimming pools and washing cars and pavements with hosepipes.

“The municipality will commence with issuing of on the spot fines of R1000 to anyone who is found watering gardens and washing cars and paves with hosepipes.”

“Water sources throughout the country are under strain as a result of unfavourable weather conditions and the conservation of water remains the responsibility of each citizen. Polokwane is a water scarce area and all are encouraged to adopt water conserving habits.”

Residents who experience challenges with water supply are advised to report to the municipality on 0152902376/2001/2002 for assistance.
