Waterberg district’s top matriculants, schools awarded

The best performing 2015 matriculants and schools in the Waterberg district were acknowledged during an awards ceremony held in Bela-Bela last Friday.

LIMPOPO – The best performing 2015 matriculants and schools in the Waterberg district were acknowledged during an awards ceremony held in Bela-Bela last Friday.

Waterberg Mayor, Tlotlanang Mogotlane, local mayors, speakers, chief whips and members of the mayoral council acknowledged the best performing 2015 Gr 12 learners and schools in the district.

The delegation led by Mogotlane handed over trophies and certificates to the best learners and schools in the district, top learners and schools per district as well as top learners and schools per circuit.

The top 10 learners were awarded bursaries by the mayor while other learners who passed matric will also be considered for bursaries.

The best performing schools in the top five were:

Ramogabudi High School with 100% pass,

T Matlala High School with 100% pass rate,

Waterberg High School with 99,1% pass rate,

Piet Potgieter High School with 94,8% pass rate and

Hebron Model School with 97,9% pass.

It is no fluke that Ramogabudi High School in Mošate village and PT Matlala High School from the deep rural area Ga-Mathapo/Makobe represented Waterberg District at the Limpopo Provincial Awards.

The poor performing schools were:

Tshebedi with 23,5% pass,

JM Gwangwa with 21,7% pass,

Rakudubane with 18,9% pass,

Senwane with 18,9% pass, and

Mashubashuba with 15,8% pass.

It proved that hard work pays and the Sterkrivier Combined School improved from 25% to 75% pass, an astounding 50% increase.

Kopano Job Minaar from D.G. Tsebe High School in Mahwelereng Circuit received the district top learner per subject as he obtained 94% in mathematics.

In the 2015 best performing schools category, education department spokesperson, Ndo Mangala, said there was a top provincial school, top district, circuit per district, 40 best schools in the province, club 50 and 100 schools as well as the 100% pass rate awards.

In Waterberg District over 9 518 candidates sat for the 2015 final exams and 5 529 passed. In 2014 the Waterberg district obtained a 70,5% pass rate and in 2015 the Waterberg district obtained 58,1% which is a decline of 12,4% in the pass rate.

Mogalakwena District in 2014 obtained 67,9% and in 2015 it obtained 58,9% which is a decline of 9,1%.

The top three learners who received 7 distinctions were Maria Elizabeth Frohlich of Frikkie Meyer High School with overall 90,29%, Hart-Mari van der Merwe of Nylstroom High School with overall 89,87% and Stephanus Hermanus Calitz of Nylstroom High School with overall 88,86%.

Mogalakwena Mayor, Parks Sebatjane, members of the executive council and ward councillors will visit the underperforming and top performing schools within the municipality to encourage and motivate them.
