A surge in violence fueled by armed robberies have hit Mokopane and residents are left powerless.

• The police are looking for four suspects that overpowered the owner of a smallholding on Percy Fyfe outside of Mokopane last Friday at around 18:00.

According to Sgt Irene Masingi, police Spokesperson for Mokopane, the victim sold chickens to the suspects when one of the suspects threatened the victim with a firearm. The suspects locked the victim and one of his customers in the chicken coop before they took off with R240, a cell phone and five chickens.

“No arrests have been made. The police appeal to anyone with information to contact Lt Daniel Moserwa at 082 565 8277.

• The murder and rape of a 32-year-old woman is being investigation after her body was found last Saturday at 23:30 in Retief Street. Sgt Masingi said: “The victim was hit over the head with an unknown object. No arrests have been made.

The police appeal to the community to assist them with information which can lead to the swift arrest of the suspect.

WO Ephriam Seabela can be contacted with information at 082 565 8277.

• Clive Manganyi (37) passed away in the Voortrekker Hospital on Monday night after he was stabbed with a knife by a suspect at a tavern in extension 19 RDP. Sgt. Masingi reported: “The suspect was arrested and will soon appear in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on a count of murder.”

After numerous armed robberies in Akasia since October, the community decided enough is enough and hired security guards to watch over them and their families. “Security measures had to be heightened, even though it is very costly it seems to be having the desired effect,” one of the residents (who would like to stay anonymous) said.

Sgt Masingi said the police are working around the clock to try and bring these criminals to justice.

“We strongly appeal yet again to the community to be vigilant at all times, lock your doors, be alert when you withdraw cash from the ATM and report suspicious behaviour to your nearest police station.”
