2 men arrested for stealing oranges
Two men have been arrested in connection with the theft of oranges at the Wolwekraal farm outside Marble Hall
LIMPOPO – Police said the suspects, aged 24 and 29, were arrested following a tip-off from farm workers.
“Police acted swiftly after the tip off and managed to arrest the suspects while they were busy harvesting the oranges,” explained Const Lethunya Mmuroa, Marble Hall police spokesperson.
Police appeal to the community, particularly those residing in farming areas or near them to help them fight theft of farm produce.
Mmuroa said 31 bags, weighing 80kg and 50kg, were confiscated over the weekend from houses around farms, including the four bags found in the possession of the suspects arrested on Wednesday morning.
“A normal sack of oranges is sold between R20 to R25 on the streets.
“Most of the thefts are committed at night and on weekends. Our investigations revealed that most suspects in theft of oranges from the farms are selling them on the streets. A sizable number of suspects have been arrested in the past for this type of crime.
If anyone sees people committing such a crime or any type of crime, they are requested to contact the police at 0800 10111 or 112,” he concluded.
Mmuroa said a case of theft was opened and the suspects were expected to appear in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court.
