‘We will not vote until our demands are met’

Roughly 200 residents from numerous villages within Mogalakwena, were escorted by the police, traffic officials, and Special Operation Solutions (SOS) last Friday, as they peacefully marched to the Mogalakwena Municipality while voicing out their concerns.

MOKOPANE – The residents sang and marched through the streets to the municipality where they handed over a memorandum with 17 demands to Mayor Parks Sebatjane.

One of the demands were: “The immediate unconditional cancellation of debts incurred by the people of Mahwelereng, since they are unable to settle their water and electricity bills that have accumulated over a period of time. They also demanded the right to clean water and the removal of waste.”

We will not vote until our demands are met,” the despondent residents told Bosveld.

Bryner Ngwenya, community leader, said: “We have a right to water and proper service delivery. Today we are marching against the corruption within the municipality and we are fighting for a better future for our children.”

The Divisional Head of Communications at the Municipality, Malesela Selokela, said: “Mayor Sebatjane as the political head of the municipality and members of the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs (CoGSTA), will thoroughly look into the demands made by the residents and report thereafter.”
