Cold-blooded slithery friends don’t rattle her nerves
Review spoke Sanet Benade about the benefits of owning a snake.
POLOKWANE – World Snake Day was celebrated on Saturday, 16 July. Review spoke with a local snake owner about the benefits of owning a snake.
Sanet Benade is a local snake owner who owns a variety of snakes ranging from king-snakes, corn-snakes, mink-snakes and red-tail boas.
“I have always been fascinated by snakes and they have a very calming effect on me. Ever since my brother brought home a couple of his pet snakes, I realised that snakes would make the ideal pets for me. I enjoy having them as pets, even if many people have misconceptions about them,” Sanet explained.
She continued by saying snakes make awesome pets because they don’t need as much space as other animals, they also eat only once a week which makes them very low maintenance pets.
Sanet explained that although many people fear snakes, they mostly do not have aggressive temperaments and in nature they generally try to avoid human contact.
“They will usually not attack without being provoked. However, I would not recommend keeping venomous snakes as pets or snakes that are longer than three meters because it is dangerous to handle these snakes without the proper experience and training or when you are alone,” Sanet concluded.
