Three hundred card carrying members of the African National Congress (ANC) joined the Democratic Alliance (DA) last Friday during an event held in Mankweng. They were welcomed by DA Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle, Provincial Chairperson Langa Bodlani and Provincial Spokesperson Solly Malatsi.
The group included former executive members of the ANC’s Castro Pilusa Branch in Ward 28 of Mentz village within Polokwane Municipality.
Smalle said their decision to distance themselves from the ruling party stems from disillusionment with empty promises, corruption, maladministration and poor service delivery within Polokwane Municipality that proves that the ANC no longer cares for the needs of the community of Mankweng.
“The new members believe in the DA’s vision of building a better future for all South Africans,” Smalle said.
Piet Magoro, aspiring DA ward candidate for Ward 28 said he left the ANC because its leadership abused him for 30 years. “It was tough in the ANC. I have been an ordinary member for many years and I have never been given any major position. Top positions are given to friends and family members only. I joined the DA because I saw a good future and there is also fairness in the party,” Magoro said.
Fellow new DA member Sabina Malatjie said she left the ANC because of selfish members attached to the organisation. “ANC leaders want everything for themselves. Members are marginalised and the party does not listen to its own people. I decided to join the DA because they treat their members equally,” she said.
