Young leaders excel
Waterberg Christen Centre of Mokopane recently invited 40 learners and eight educators from four high school in Mogalakwena to take part in a leadership development programme designed for secondary school students.
MOKOPANE – The schools that attended were Waterberg High School, Mokopane English Combined School, Bakenberg High School and Hoërskool Piet Potgieter.
During a weeklong camp the church brought in leaders and volunteers to teach and disciple the learners through the International Leadership Academy’s curriculum. The Academy’s curriculum has four primary categories in which the learners are taught: My Community, My Leadership, My Choice, and My View.
Each learner was asked to complete a community project within 6 months of their camp experience. The outcome was truly amazing, as the learners each went out into the community impacting the people around them. The projects ranged from cleaning up trash, volunteering at a local clinic to serve alongside the staff, fundraising at an old age home to extend the existing structure and teaching them to create and sell crafts, the creation of a tutoring program for primary school learners, and much more.
The top project was completed by Sophia Koka and Flora Langa from Bakenberg High School. After much thought they volunteered at a local primary school, painting the library, sorting books, and tutoring learners in reading, writing, and maths.
Out of the 40 learners, 27 learners will continue their journey with the Academy for their second year in the programme; alongside a brand new set of learners starting the first year track of ILA.
In 2017 the ILA envision many more schools and learners becoming involved in the programme, impacting and serving their communities as the Academy continue to invest in young leaders. The Academy has the opportunity to then ultimately become the developers of young leaders in our communities.
